BRIDGEPORT TOWNSHIP, MI - Five adults and eight children are displaced following a fire at their Bridgeport Township home on the day before Thanksgiving.  The fire started "as a result of a dryer" in the basement of the home, according to Bridgeport Township Fire Department Assistant Chief David Smigiel.  Smigiel said smoke detectors alerted the sleeping occupants to the fire.  All the occupants were able to get safely out of the house, but one woman fell down a few stairs and was taken to an area hospital with what he thought were minor injuries.  As a result of smoke damage, the occupants have been displaced, he said.

BARLING, ESSEX UK - A smoke alarm saved the life of a couple when a tumble dryer fire engulfed their kitchen this morning.  Firefighters from Southend were called to deal with the incident.  Acting station officer Angus Neale said the couple were asleep when the man was woken by the alarm and went into the hallway to investigate.  When he smelled smoke, the pair then evacuated their bungalow through the front door.  The kitchen was completely fire damaged, while there was 30 per cent smoke damage to the rest of the property.

PLANT CITY, FL - A clothes dryer caused a fire in a home Sunday afternoon.  Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the home.  The fire was contained to the room where the dryer was located, firefighters said. To keep the fires from starting, firefighters recommend cleaning the lint filters before each use and removing lint that has collected around the drum, the release said.  Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used and an air exhaust vent pipe should be unrestricted, allowing the outdoor vent flap to open when the dryer is operating.  Lint should be cleaned from the vent pipe at least once a year.  Dryers should be turned off when homeowners leave or go to sleep, the release said.

TOLEDO, WA - A Toledo home was heavily damaged Tuesday after a clothes dryer caught on fire, said fire investigator Sgt. EDINBURG, TX - The Edinburg Fire Department says two brothers lost their home because of a dryer fire.  Their home went up in flames Saturday morning.  It happened around midnight when one of the men was washing his clothes.  Edinburg fire says the dryer was the cause.  Edinburg Fire Deputy Chief Ubaldo Perez says dryer fires occur more often than people know.

OPS TOWNSHIP, ND - Deputy Chief Ron Raymer of Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service says the fire, which started in the dryer, was contained to the dryer and part of a wall.  Crews from Lindsay, Ops and Oakwood were dispatched to the call.  A 12-year-old boy who was home at the time of the fire safely left the house and went to his neighbour's to call 9-1-1, Deputy Chief Raymer says, adding that all animals that had been in the house were safe.

HAMPTON, VA - The smell of smoke alerted six people to fire in their Hampton home.  Investigators say the fire started in the dryer in the Gatling Drive home.  Crews saw smoke and flames coming from the back of the home when they arrived and got the fire out in about 30 minutes.  The Red Cross is helping the four adults and two children who lived there because there's a lot of damage to the home, fire officials said.

"The sprinkler system really knocked the fire down.  This is where sprinkler systems save lives," said Ledoux.  Many seniors were evacuated from the building.

GREENEVILLE, TN - A fire Sunday afternoon that heavily damaged a Hartshaw Lane house started as a result of a clothes dryer that caught fire, sheriff's Deputy Greg Tipton said in a report.  The homeowner told deputies that he and his wife "found the back room where the dryer was engulfed in flames," the report said.  Damage to the brick house is estimated at $70,000.  Damage to contents of the house was estimated earlier this week at $8,000.

JASPER, IN - The home where three people were killed is demolished.  The house has been empty since the fire.  20-year-old Linsey Parsley, her 3-year-old son Robert Parsley, and Linsey's boyfriend 20-year-old Alex Snedeker died when the upstairs apartment they were living in caught fire.  The fire marshal's office determined the fire started in the clothes dryer vent.  Fire officials say the house did not have working smoke detectors.

PALO ALTO, CA - A clothes dryer fire broke out inside of a home on Sierra Vista Avenue Friday morning.  Fire crews put out the flames, and there were no injuries, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.  The fire was discovered around 6 a.m. inside the garage, according to fire spokeswoman Jamie Garrett. The residents were able to subdue the fire with an extinguisher until fire crews arrived.  Garrett said it's important to frequently clean out the lint catcher, and clean out the ventilation of the dryer once a year.

YPSILANTI, MI - A dryer that burst into flames caused $15,000 worth of damage at an Ypsilanti home Friday night.  Ypsilanti fire crews were called at 10:30 p.m. for the blaze, according to Captain Richard Barnabo.  "The dryer and some clothes around it were on fire," he said.  A neighbor had unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher before crews arrived.  Firefighters contained the blaze to the laundry room, Barnabo said.  There was $11,000 damage to the home and $4,000 in damages to the contents, Barnabo said.

THE DALLES, OR - Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue chief Robert Palmer said the cause of the fire was lint in the clothes dryer or the vent and while it didn't extend beyond the laundry room, there was smoke damage throughout the home.  The clothes in the dyer were burned as well as material on top of the dryer.  Palmer said home owners should pull out the dyer every six months to clean out the vent.  He estimated the damage was between $25,000 and $30,000.

INDEPENDENCE, MO - A Friday morning fire displaced a family of five.  At 8:48 a.m., the Independence Fire Department responded to what was called a dryer fire.  Battalion Chief Brad Waterworth said the fire had spread through the laundry room and into the kitchen but was extinguished within five minutes of the call after Station 1 responded.  The laundry room was destroyed, the kitchen received extensive damage and there was smoke damage throughout the residence, Waterworth said.

HASTINGS, NE - The Hastings Fire Department was dispatched to the residence shortly before 7:30 a.m.  Smoke was coming from the basement of the home when they arrived.  According to Fire Chief Kent Gilbert, a fire sparked in the family's dryer.  "When we got here we found that clothes had been burning in the dryer in the basement.  The family was able to get out of the building and evacuate," said Gilbert.  Fire fighters were able to contain the fire and while there was very little structural damage, fire officials said there is smoke damage throughout the home.  The family was able to make it out safely, but as of Friday morning, they had yet to find their pet cat.

SAINT GEORGE, UT - Seven people were displaced from their home following a fire that began in a clothes dryer and spread to the home's structure.  Stan Hawkins, who owns the house, said his renters include a couple with five children.  The family may be out for as long as six weeks while a restoration company deals with the damages.  "The fire was contained to the garage and the laundry, but there was smoke throughout (the house)," he said.  St. George Fire Department Capt. DE PERE, WI - Two officers and a tenant were treated for smoke inhalation after a dryer fire in De Pere.  De Pere police were the first to arrive on scene, and they were directed to the second floor apartments.  The officers found fire in a hallway near a dryer near a rear apartment.  Two officers and the tenant inhaled smoke and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.  The fire caused damage throughout the second floor and the kitchen area of the bar.  Two tenants were displaced from their apartments.

ALLEN PARK, MI - One person suffered minor burns when a dryer caught fire.  Deputy Fire Chief Ed Cann said the occupant was in the house when the dryer erupted in flames, and suffered burns attempting to put the blaze out before the Fire Department arrived.  The department had a five minute response time and was able to contain the fire to just the dryer.  "Within about 10 more minutes the house would have been involved in flames," he said. "It's extremely important to empty the lint tray before every load of laundry, and on occasion open the front of the dryer and vacuum around the motor and the heat source." Cann said that the entire ductwork system leading completely outside of the house should be cleaned every few months in order to ensure there is nothing flammable left in the system.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Three families were uprooted from their home after a fire ripped through both floors.  Fire investigators with Colorado Springs Fire Department say the fire was caused by a build up of lint in the clothes dryer.  Investigators say the lint got clogged in the vent pipe that goes from the dryer to the outside of the home.  The fire caused "significant damage throughout the house," Lt. Kriss Soppe told 11 News. "Smoke was very heavy and we've had also some interior structural collapse which makes it a lot more dangerous for the firefighters inside," Soppe explained.  The fire department says four of six family pets perished.

LANCASHIRE, UK - A pet parrot and cat have been killed in a Oswaldtwistle house fire.  They died after a dryer caught fire in the front room of a home in Frederick Street.  Two dogs, believed to be a Jack Russell and a terrier, were rescued by firefighters from Accrington Fire Station.  Firefighters wore breathing masks to enter the middle-aged woman's terraced home and rescue the two dogs.  The front room was badly damaged by fire, while the remainder of the house suffered severe smoke damage, Mr Drinkwater added.

CHINO HILLS, CA - A clothes dryer ignited a fire that caused $150,000 damage and displaced both of the house's residents, fire officials say.  Two vehicles burned in the garage and the entire house sustained smoke damage, Chino Valley Fire District spokeswoman Massiel Ladron De Guevara said in a written statement.  The incident underscores the need to check and clean household clothes dryers, fire officials say.  "Lint can build up in your dryer or in the exhaust duct ..., blocking airflow and causing excessive heat buildup that can result in a fire," according to the statement.  Dryers should be professionally installed and serviced, officials say.  The exhuaust vent pipe and vent flap should be peridoically inspected.  Finally, officials say, once a year -- or whenever the machine begins to take longer than usual to dry clothes -- lint should be removed from the vent pipe.

GOSHEN, IN - A fatal fire has local fire departments urging Tri-Staters to inspect their clothes dryers.  Benjamin Ledford, 33, died in the basement of his home, trapped by smoke and flames, authorities said.  A neighbor's claims that a clothes dryer fire was to blame for Ledford's death.  "I went around the back of the door in back of the house and saw that the dryer vent… was on fire," neighbor Ron Mitchell said.  A review of fire inspection reports obtained from the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office revealed there were 580 clothes dryer fires across Ohio in 2013 and 2014.  Nearly one in four was caused by lint buildup inside the dryer.  Cleaning the "lint trap" alone is not enough to prevent fires.

BEWDLEY, ON CANADA - A fire that destroyed a home started in a dryer, according to the fire chief.   Hamilton Township firefighters spent hours battling the fire that engulfed the Oak Street house.  Crews were called to the scene at 2:23 p.m., said Hamilton Township Fire Chief Kelly Serson.  On Jan. 11 Chief Serson went back to the house to investigate the cause of the fire and determined it started in the clothes dryer.  It is believed two cats died in the blaze, said Chief Serson.  Crews tried to enter the home but were overtaken by heat and smoke, he added. Neighbours watched as the fire consumed the home.
