In-O-Vate Technologies Develops First Clothes Dryer Safety Alarm

In-O-Vate Technologies, Inc., makers of the popular Dryerbox®, expands their dryer venting product line with the introduction of the LintAlert®, a smart home safety device that monitors and displays the back pressure levels found in the exhaust conduit of your dryer. As airflow gets restricted, five LED lights progressively illuminate, alerting users to have their duct system cleaned.

Since its award winning debut at the 2009 National Hardware Show in Las Vegas, the LintAlert has become a popular value-added product offered by vent cleaning technicians and HVAC service groups nationwide. The LintAlert also received the prestigious Pete Lewter Innovation Award from the Chimney Safety Institute of America and has become a staple on service trucks across America.

Dryer fires and clogged exhaust ducts are a significant problem in the United States, and the LintAlert is proud to be the first device available to help mitigate future disasters. Improper dryer venting wastes energy and increases utility bills, but it also creates a very real fire hazard. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, clothes dryers were involved in an estimated 14,000 U.S. structure fires, 29 deaths, 425 injuries, and $191 million in direct property damage, annually, between 2006-2010.

Five factors contribute to dryer fires, but often times they are hidden. During everyday use, lint has a tendency to bypass the appliance's filter screen and ultimately accumulates in the duct. Several factors contributing to rapid lint build-up:

  • excessively long or restrictive ducts
  • bird or rodent nests in the external termination vent
  • crushed or kinked flex transition hoses
  • terminations with screen-like features
  • condensation within the duct work due to un-insulated ducts in cold spaces

HVAC crews and vent cleaning technicians are the go-to professionals for selling the LintAlert since proper calibration requires the dryer's exhaust to be clean, or in a like-new condition. Once the system is cleaned, the field tech calibrates the LintAlert in 6 seconds to "learn" the unit's baseline reading. The LintAlert® uses pressure differential technology to measure back flow pressure caused by lint buildup or a sudden blockage in the vent system.

Under normal operation, the LintAlert's transparent lens glows a steady blue, doubling as a night light. As lint builds up over time and restricts airflow, the light bar blockage indicator will progressively illuminate from green to yellow then to red. The audible alarm can be muted by pressing the control button once, leaving the flashing LED lights as a reminder that maintenance should be provided to the dryer's exhaust.

For the security minded homeowner, the LintAlert® provides a genuine means to determine what levels of blockage exist in their home’s dryer exhaust conduit and consequently, how much energy is being wasted.  The LintAlert® is now available through HVAC distributors and vent cleaning companies nationwide. More information can be found at www.LintAlert.com.

LintAlert Dryer Safety Alarm wins Product of the Year Award from Electronic House

The LintAlert Dryer Safety Alarm from In-O-Vate Technologies received the Product of the Year Award in the Fire Safety category for Electronic House at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. Products entered in this program are judged by industry experts, integrators and the editors of Electronic House, to join an exclusive group of products deemed the most noteworthy for 2011.

The LintAlert is a smart, easy-to-install home safety device that monitors and displays the back pressure levels found in the exhaust conduit of your clothes dryer.

The LintAlert provides a visual display of the current pressure levels that exist in ones clothes dryers’ exhaust conduit. Proper dryer venting is much more important than most homeowners realize. Considering the stakes involved and the frequency of residential dryer fires, the topic of dryer venting deserves more attention than it gets. Besides the danger of fire, lint build-up, birds’ nests and crushed hoses prolong drying times, waste energy and contribute to additional lint build-up.

This first-of-its-kind dryer safety alarm exhibits a back-lit logo lens that doubles as a night light for the laundry room. The pass-through plug feature provides an extra outlet and the FLASH-Based 8-Bit CMOS Microcontroller contains the well thought out code, all accessible through the button on the front panel. The final stage of alarm is a combination audible and visual alarm. The audible portion can be muted.

The installation of the tap fitting in the dryers' transition hose is relatively easy and requires a ball point pen to puncture the wall of the flex so the tap fitting can be inserted. No other tools are required to install the LintAlert.
